Go8 European Fellowships – Call for Applications

The Group of Eight (Go8) today opened applications for its 2010 European Fellowships.

The Fellowships are open to early career researchers from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and, for the first time this year, Croatia.

Each fellow will receive benefits worth $20,000 to travel to Australia in 2010 and work at a Go8 university for up to six months.

‘The Go8 European Fellowships recognise the importance of international contacts for early career researchers and aim to help establish those contacts in Australia for talented young researchers from emerging European economies,’ said Go8 Chair, Professor Alan Robson.

‘We are delighted to open the scheme up this year to include Croatia, which is expected to become a European Union member in the near future.’

‘The scheme has been running for three years and has resulted in the exchange of skills and knowledge of benefit to the individual researchers and to the citizens of Australia and the European countries involved.’

‘All the professional contacts I made at the University of Queensland are invaluable and I have offered to host academics, who will in the future travel in Central Europe, at my home university.’ Dr Martina Horakova, Go8 European Fellow 2008

‘The Fellowship gave me a great opportunity to further develop the ongoing co-operation with the University of Sydney, as well as to upgrade my research skills.’ Dr Iva Strnadova, Go8 European Fellow 2008

‘I will publish a paper with my academic supervisor from the University of Adelaide and will definitely stay in touch and hope to come back next year.’ Dr Malgorzata Kotula-Balak, Go8 European Fellow 2009

‘The alumni of this important Go8 scheme establish life-long professional and personal connections and continue to collaborate with Australian research partners when they return to their home institutions,’ Professor Robson concluded.

Applications close on 30 October 2009.
