Motolák Lives

The beginning of the 2009—10 academic year ushered in the beginning of a new student faculty life; a new player, for whom many have been waiting. Its name is Motolák, and as an official association, started by students from the 2nd Faculty of Medicine, should take over the duty of organizing the traditional cultural and social events in our faculty. These include such events as the annual formal ball and post-graduation boat party. Overall, its primary function is to fulfill the needs and wants of the students.

The idea is not new, but in the spring of last year a couple of active students from the academic student faculty and the organization IFMSA CZ (www.ifmsa.cz) decided to unite their energies and start this organization. During the summer holiday the name and first plans for the association were decided.

In September a few members went to Dobronice (a sports & activity camp for incoming freshman) to introduce Motolák to the younger students (a type of medics-to-medics programme) to determine their interest in co-operating. Student interest was substantial, and many contact emails and promises of help were obtained. This encouraged the board members to organize at welcome week. The intention was to show Motol and its surrounding area to the first years. During this time, there was a student book-exchange, with a great turnout, which has ensured that it will happen again next year, with improvements. Welcome week ended with a party at Dr. Vojak, where Motolák was introduced to the entire academic population. MUDr. Hrušák made an appearance to bless the occasion.

The founding members of Motolák's first meeting was held in Motol. The agenda was to accept the rules/regulations, to discuss the board of directors, and to vote for the board itself. To run this new organization, the following people were nominated:

Lukas Martinkovic – President
Ivana Kaliankova – Vice President for International Students
Sergej Karpowicz – Vice President of Administration
Ondrej Suchanek – Vice President of Projects
Tomas Novotny – Vice President of External Corporation

These people are currently trying to develop the necessary steps for the efficient running of the association. They are preparing special web pages which would be part of the faculty website, so that everybody can find information about planned events and also report the outcomes of the events. The board are setting up a database of all members and they are looking for a free site for a contact point, where it will be possible to meet once a week to coordinate different projects, and allow people to make contact over any issues. After addressing everyday needs, the association is working intensively to organize faculty events such as a Christmas Workshop and the LF2 Ball.

LF2 Ball — because of technical difficulties, this couldn't take place during the usual December term, but will occur at the beginning of the summer semester: Saturday, 28. 2. 2009. We fully believe that this change won't affect the attendance and that, in fact, the date change will allow more people to attend the ball who previously complained that it would be not convenient to attend during the busy Christmas time. The program of the Ball is almost ready. You can look forward to the seventeen-person Orchestra of Ladislav Bares or Carisma-Orchestra (Latin Music). Our big success: we have again managed to organize for students a pre-dance under the professional leadership of Sonia Kravcenkova (fifth year) who has been training since the beginning of October.

A glance at the events which Motolák has co-organized with the faculty for 2008/09:

  • Fresher's Week (Tour of Motol, and Book Exchange)
  • Welcome Party at Club Dr. Vojak
  • Walk against Diabetes
  • Christmas Workshop
  • LF2 Ball
  • Motol Mile
  • No-smoking Party
  • Graduates' Cruise, and others...

Dear students, help us to brighten student life in Motol! Participate in the activities of the organization, that was created specifically for you. If you would like to participate in any of the events above, or have ideas or insights about any of the events, please don't hesitate to contact us! There's a lot of work to be done, but we believe that with all our energies, we can, step by step, make Motolák work.

Thanks for your continued support, and we are looking forward to co-operating with you!

From all the board members of Motolák,
Ondrej Suchanek
