It is with great sorrow that I must inform all members of the academic staff that docent Zdeněk Kabelka, Head of the Department of ENT, has passed away. The faculty has lost an exceptional individual, an outstanding specialist and a generous colleague, and I have lost a close personal friend.

I always respected Zdeněk greatly and admired him not just as a doctor and department head but also as an active member of the academic senate of many years standing. We took great delight in his magnificent photographs and we will always see his smiling and kindly face before us.

In his encomium of Professor Koutecký docent Kabelka wrote the following words: ‘What I felt from Professor Koutecký, and what was in perfect accord with my own understanding of the world, was his humanity. He had an understanding of the full extent of the way things should be ordered, and how important this is. He was one of those people who would lay foundations with great forethought and then who would build on them patiently to create something that would be strong, spacious and pleasing to both the eye and the spirit.’ I think exactly the same is true of docent Kabelka. What he built so carefully and well in the faculty during his life will remain with us. He will be greatly missed by me, by the whole faculty, the students and above all by his family and patients. Let us all honour his memory.
