The international students of the Second Faculty of Medicine had the invaluable opportunity to visit the Institute of Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKEM). Report by Keveen de Silva.
The international students of the Second Faculty of Medicine had the invaluable opportunity to visit the Institute of Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKEM) on 14 February. The Institute is one of the largest specialised clinical and scientific research centres in the Czech Republic focussing on the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, organ transplants, diabetology and metabolic disorders.
The visit was organised by the international students' coordinator, Mgr. Petra Fabingerová, with the intention of giving the students an understanding and overview of the basic functions of one of leading medical facilities in Central Europe. MUDr. Jaroslav Chlupáč, a specialist in vascular surgery, did a short presentation covering the scope of IKEM's work, its involvement in the transplantation programme and was eager to answer the questions our students had. The visit concluded with a tour of the operating theatres and the intensive care unit.
