Experimental Neurophysiology and Neuropsychology

Info

The CBAS team participated at the Alzheimer's Association International Conferencein 2023 in Amsterdam.

The Experimental Neurophysiology and Neuropsychology research group at the Second Faculty of Medicine, under the leadership of Prof. Jakub Hort stands out for its multidisciplinary approach, integrating diverse fields to advance the understanding of brain and cognitive functions. The Department of Neurology, together with the Departments of Physiology and Pathological Physiology, collaborated in its formation. This comprehensive team combines basic science, translational research, and clinical applications, addressing complex neurological issues such as Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, epileptic encephalopathies, brain malformations, autoimmune encephalitis, and brain tumors.

This group benefits from close connections with various clinical departments and boasts specialized working groups and laboratories, facilitating a range of investigative focuses:

  • Genetic and molecular studies.
  • Structural and cognitive analyses of neurological disorders.
  • Functional correlates of brain diseases.

The research infrastructure is robust, bolstered by IPE2 support, which enabled the creation of specialized laboratories. These facilities include:

  • Biomarker laboratory for analysing blood and cerebrospinal fluid
  • In vivo and in vitro suites for functional and structural imaging
  • Electrophysiological laboratory
  • Gene manipulation facilities, incorporating cutting-edge optogenetic and chemogenetic methods
  • A spatial cognition lab

This integration of technology and interdisciplinary expertise positions the group as a leader in exploring the neurological and cognitive aspects of various diseases.

Experimental Neuropsychology and Epileptology

Experimental Epileptology

The main goal of this group is to enhance diagnostic methods and discover new treatment approaches for neurodegenerative diseases and epilepsy. Thanks to grant and institutional support, projects have been initiated focusing on:

  • Biomarker analysis from blood and cerebrospinal fluid for neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Alzheimer's disease, frontotemporal lobar degeneration, and Lewy body disease).
  • Investigating spatial orientation in patients in the early stages of neurodegenerative diseases as a non-invasive cognitive marker.
  • Clarifying cellular and network mechanisms of epilepsy, and understanding the significance of disrupted neuro-glial interactions, brain metabolism, and neuroinflammation in the pathogenesis of brain neurodegenerative diseases and epilepsy.
  • Searching for new personalized treatment methods for epilepsy, including gene therapy, understanding the impact of genetic mutations on brain development and excitability, and elucidating the mechanisms of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy.
  • Experimental neuropsychology and epileptology, focusing on clinical research into social cognition, the impact of epilepsy surgery and pharmacotherapy on patient quality of life.

From 2024 to 2026, we will continue focusing on these main research directions and publish our findings in high-impact neuroscience and neurology journals. Support from IPE3 is crucial for ensuring the long-term stability of team personnel and the sustainability of their research activities.

In the field of neurodegenerative disease research, our goal is to enhance multidisciplinary differential diagnosis of cognitive deficits through:

  • Experimental cognitive testing and spatial orientation examinations.
  • Analysis of metabolic markers of neurodegeneration from blood and cerebrospinal fluid.
  • Genetic marker identification.

Additionally, the Experimental Neuropsychology and Epileptology research group will strengthen close collaboration between scientists engaged in both basic and clinical research and facilitate the translation of experimental observations into clinical practice at both national and international levels.
