Characteristics of the study programme
The Experimental Intensive Medicine program provides a unique opportunity for medical and allied health professionals to focus on developing skills in scientific research and experimental work. Emphasizing methodology, critical thinking, and a forward-looking approach to future directions and innovations in intensive care, the program aims to offer a comprehensive education that blends theoretical knowledge with practical application. It prepares participants to lead research projects and communicate results effectively. This program is ideal for those aspiring to become future leaders in the field and contribute to advancements in intensive care medicine.
Admission procedure requirements
The conditions and course of the admission procedure for the part-time of study are the same as the conditions for the full-time form.
We recommend contacting your potential supervisor in advance and consulting the suitable form of preparation for the interview. Each study programme has its own specifics, so the supervisor can help you to prepare for the specialized entrance examination (the interview).
Topics of dissertation thesis
The candidate chooses the preliminary topic individually and contacts a potential supervisor, or they may consult the topics listed below. The choice is not, however, limited to them — the candidate is encouraged to come up with their own topics of research as well. The applicant consults the chosen topic with the potential supervisor and agrees on its more precise specification. In case of any ambiguity, we recommend contacting the SAB chairman. If necessary, he may recommend a consultation on the topic with another specialist according to the focus of the intended project. If the candidate does not know which topic/supervisor to choose, the applicant will contact the chairman of the SAB, with whom they consult a suitable topic and a potential supervisor. This choice is preliminary, the admissions board may, after consultation with the candidate, nominate another supervisor.

Supervisors of the study programme
Each supervisor must be approved by the SAB. The criteria for admitting new supervisors are determined by the SAB. If the proposed supervisor has not yet been approved by the SAB, this must be done no later than the enrollment of the applicant in the study (provided that the applicant is accepted).
Study requirements
You are obliged to fulfill the following study requirements:
At least one obligatory course focusing on the methodology of scientific works:
- Introduction to Practical Research Methodology (CPGS005)
- Advanced Methodology and Data Science for Intensive Care Research (CPGS017)
Recommended courses:
- for graduates of non-medical Master's programmes, the SAB recommends the course "Základy lékařských věd pro studenty z nelékařských oborů"
- other courses can be chosen after consulting the supervisor from the offer for biomedicine PhD students (to be found here: http://dspb.avcr.cz), potentially from the doctoral courses offer at respective faculties
Students are expected to present at two or more student/expert conferences, at least one presentation must include original research conclusions. One of the conferences must be the Second Faculty of Medicine's Scientific Conference (DS002), which is a compulsory requirement for all PhD students at the Second Faculty of Medicine.
Students are obliged to sit the course and pass the exam in English for doctoral study programmes (CPGS001), which can be substituted by obtaining a certificate in English, level C1/C2.
Another requirement is an internship abroad for a period of at least 2 months. This requirement may be potentially substituted by a presentation in English at an international conference.
Students also attend a colloquium on the interpretation of data and scientific methodology in intensive care medicine. The colloquium deals with the critical analysis of an article's methodology —this peer-reviewed analysis demonstrates the candidate's ability to understand research methodology. In the second part, the candidate presents and analyzes their own research methodology. Before the colloquium, candidates are expected to submit a literary review of their dissertation topic, hypotheses, and methodology/protocols.
Requirements for internships
Students are expected to complete an internship abroad for a period of at least 2 months. This requirement may be potentially substituted by a presentation in English at an international conference.
Publication activity requirements
Students are expected to actively participate in at least two conferences, congresses and expert gatherings, including student conferences. It is expected that students will submit a grant application (GAUK etc.) in the role of the main investigator.
Students are expected to publish two original articles with an impact factor (according to WoS). At least one publication must include original data/research outcomes and must be published in a journal with at least Q3 or higher. The student must be the first author.
Defence requirements
- colloquium
- all requirements outlined in the ISP must be fulfilled
Profile of a graduate of the study programme
Graduates of the Experimental Intensive Medicine programme, with an emphasis on methodology and critical thinking, will be able to critically evaluate data, lead research projects, and contribute to innovations in this dynamic field. They will be equipped with the necessary skills for effective communication and presentation of results, which is a prerequisite for future leaders in the field.
Information about graduate employment
Graduates of the study programme can be employed as researchers in theoretical and clinical departments, especially in medical faculties, research centres and institutes. Successful study enables them to participate in teaching, especially within the university.
