Students of doctoral study programmes can study at foreign universities under the Joint Supervision (so-called cotutelle). The joint (dual) supervision of the dissertation takes place on the basis of cooperation between the CU and the foreign university. It is ensured by two supervisors: one from each of the institutions involved and the student spends part of the doctoral study (at least 25 %) at both institutions.
For each doctorate prepared in the cotutelle scheme, the partner institutions enter into a separate Agreement on Joint Supervision of a Dissertation Thesis (see below), which sets out the conditions, time schedule, and other requirements for studies and the defence of the dissertation. It is signed by the student and their supervisors, the dean of the faculty, the rector of Charles University and the relevant representatives of the partner institution. The contact person is Pavla Zídková.
The student must be enrolled for doctoral studies at both universities before the contract is signed, thus fulfilling study duties at both of them. The student discusses the possible conduct of the doctoral study programme in the cotutelle mode with his/her supervisor at the Second Faculty of Medicine and addresses his/her future supervisor at the partner university. If both potential supervisors agree on the joint supervision, the student fills in the template contract with all the known information, which they hand over to the contact person at the other university to the faculty coordinator (contact above). The process of negotiations and contract amendments follows until the contract is signed by all stakeholders. This process may take up to several months, and it is recommended to sign the contract within a year after the student’s enrolment. Therefore, we highly recommend getting in touch with the potential second university and supervisor as soon as possible (ideally during the application process to both universities).
The student is fully responsible for meeting all the requirements at both universities. In case you need any further information on the process, please consult the methodology provided by the Rectorate.
